A study on the next generation grid design, operation, and control technology in the era of carbon neutrality.
The KENTECH Institute for Grid modernization seeks to respond to the climate change crisis by transforming a fossil fuel-based grid into an eco-friendly one, and to realize a futuristic society planned with digital technologies such as electric vehicles and metaBUS. The institute will create a concept for next-generation grids and develop the necessary technologies, focusing on technologies for analyzing, predicting, operating, protecting, and controlling future grids.

Research
Our research institute’s goal is to develop technology for establishing a carbon-neutral power grid. Research areas include carbon-free power generation, power conversion, electric machinery, and power systems. Our specific research includes:
Design and operation of a new power grid
The power grid of the future will be renewable energy-based, power electronic-based, and multi energy-based system. Thus, the underlying philosophy of conventional power systems needs to be re-imagined. Our research institute will spearhead this revolution with new, cutting-edge technology.
Keywords: Power Systems, DC Grid, HVDC, MVDC, Microgrid, Renewable Energy
Future power grid technologies
The carbon-neutral power grid will require the integration of new technologies. These include high-voltage DC (HVDC), medium-voltage DC (MVDC), microgrid, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), and energy storage (including power-to-X technology) systems. Our research covers these technologies from development through application.
Keywords: Power Electronics, V2G, Energy Storage System, Power Semiconductor, Power Converter
Future energy systems operation
Future energy exchange markets will feature multiple participants because distributed generators and prosumers will constitute an integral part of the power grid. Energy system and market operation will therefore become increasingly complex. Our research institute is concerned with energy market design, consumer-oriented operation, and future energy management systems (EMS).
Keywords: Power Economics, Energy Market, Market Operation, Demand Response, Energy Management System
Electricity safety technology
Thousands of electrical facilities will be installed near consumers and power systems will use new materials like PV and ESS. New safety technologies such as AI-based diagnosis, complex network theory, and big data-based management will need to be incorporated. Our comprehensive research and instruction covers all of these safety innovations.
Keywords: Electrical Diagnosis, Complex Network, Electrical Safety
Energy policy
In the realization of carbon-neutrality, energy policy will be as important as technology. Energy techno-policy and other policy related issues are all within the scope of our research and instruction.
